Summary

The phases outlined here can be applied to a number of small and medium organizations. The key facts to remember are that termination is usually a business decision and must be treated as such. The adoption of a defined policy makes the process easier for both the person being fired and the person conducting the termination. Once an employee has left your employ, you have no control over their actions. I have seen more often than not a person’s attitude change dramatically after being let go. Once rational, these people now pose an increased risk to your organization and its security. Finally, no matter how hard it may seem, once a user is given the news, they must be escorted from the building immediately. More organizations lose data as a result of giving an employee two weeks notice and then letting them stay on at the office. It is easier for all involved to make a clean break.

With a process in place, the organization can continue to conduct business in a safe and secure manner.
