ATM Skimming is a rapidly growing scam that could result in your bank account being sucked dry.
In order to "skim" an ATM, criminals attach a device over the ATM card reader slot to capture your card information as you insert it. They also install either a wireless camera in the vicinity of the ATM to read your PIN, or an overlay on the keypad that can capture and record your key presses. A skilled criminal can install both devices in just a few minutes.
So how can you protect yourself? This is a case where a little situational awareness can save you plenty.
- Cover your hand while typing your PIN so that it cannot be captured by a remote camera.
- Grab the card reader slot and shake it before you insert your card. Skimming devices are often mounted with double sided tape.
- If the cover of the card reader comes off in your hand, walk away quickly. The crook may be nearby, and he will definitely want his skimming device back.
- Call your bank or walk inside the branch to let them know what you've discovered.
- You should also walk away if something just looks wrong, or someone is hanging around the ATM.
By the way, these same rules apply to gas pumps. Stay safe.
