It's a sickening feeling, to suddenly realize that your smartphone (along with its pictures, business contacts, emails, etc.) is still in the backseat of a taxi. Or worse yet, that it's been stolen. Or that you don't have the foggiest idea where you last put it down.
If you carry a smartphone, there are simple, effective steps that you can take to keep your data secure. These steps include:
- Setting a Password
- Enabling Remote Wipe
- Installing Anti-virus Software
I've put together a quick guide to smartphone security. Check it out. The next time you reach for your smartphone and can't find it, you'll thank me.

great advice William, and actually companies can follow your advice too. I’m an employee of Symantec and we’ve found that individuals typically like to choose the make and model of smart phone they want to use, and these devices become a primary means of communication for business and personal reasons. Companies do not have to restrict what phones their employees can use, but they should implement device and application control to prevent someone from downloading malware to a phone, and the ability to remotely lock or wipe a device if it’s lost or stolen to protect sensitive business information on it.
