Is it Big Brother, or just a high tech attendance book?
Stephen Russell picked up on a story about a UK school that invested thousands in a facial recognition system to take attendance
The system, created by faceREGISTER constructs a biometric template of each students' face and then allows them to sign themselves in to school using a unique PIN.
Proponents of the system see it as a convenient way to automate the mundane task of the morning roll call. Detractors see it as an incursion of totalitarianism into everyday life. As one reader of the Daily Mail commented
That's right, start with the kids because some will think it's "COOL" and get them used to totalitarian technology. It's the up coming generations who will not even realise that they have had their rights stripped from them, because to them it will be normal.
